Jazz at The Place to Celebrate Ella Fitzgerald’s Centennial Year with Jazz Tribute

Classic songs from the Ella Fitzgerald Songbook delivered by Pensacola vocalist Kathy Lyon and her quartet will be the fare at the Gulf Jazz Society’s Tues., March 14th event at The Place in downtown Panama City. The music starts at 6:30 p.m.

2017 celebrates the 100th anniversary of the American legend Fitzgerald’s birth.

Filling out the quartet will be Pianist Mike Levine, Bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Charles Pagano.

The evening’s song list will include renditions of such classic Fitzgerald tunes, “Stomping at the Savoy,” “Oh, Lady Be Good,” “Mack The Knife” and the signature number Fitzgerald wrote, “A-Tisket, A-Tasket.”

“Kathy Lyon projects a lively, exuberant, and sparkling personality and conveys warmth and joy in every performance,” said Bassist Steve Gilmore, event organizer. “And, she is perfectly suited to convey the charm and beauty of Fitzgerald’s voice.”

Ms. Lyon is a featured performer at music venues and clubs throughout the Pensacola area. She has appeared at both the Pensacola and Jazz-By-the-Bay festivals and at the MidAtlanticJazz Festival in Rockville MD.

She is regarded by professional musicians for her beautiful tone and perfect intonation, and for her ability to interpret and tell the story of a song.

Pianist Levine’s career is a blend of different aspects of music, both blues, jazz and smooth jazz. He attended the University of Miami and continues to perform at top jazz clubs in the Miami area well as jazz festivals. He spends his winters in the Panama City area.

He has recorded two well received CD’s that are currently on the top of the Smooth Jazz charts, From The Heart and Thinking of You.

Bassist Steve Gilmore, a three-time Grammy award winner, is considered one of the best jazz bassists in the world. Drummer Charles Pagano appears at top jazz venues throughout the Florida Panhandle.
